Co-Investigator of Performing the Jewish Archive project

Joseph Toltz is Research Fellow at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, The University of Sydney, and co-Investigator for Performing the Jewish Archive. The 2010-11 Barbara and Richard Rosenberg Fellow at the Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, he is co-authoring a book with Dr Anna Boucher (USyd) on the first printed collection of Holocaust songs (forthcoming, Indiana University Press). In 2014 he staged the first Sydney performances of the children’s opera Brundibár. He is currently completing a stage work about musical experience and memories of a child survivor in the Łódź Ghetto. His latest academic publications include a chapter in Music’s Immanent Future: the Deleuzian Turn in Music Studies (Routledge, 2016), "Music and Memory at Liberation”, Southerly, 76(1) (2016), a chapter co-authored with Linda Barwick in Perspectives on Artistic Research in Music (Lexington, 2017), two forthcomings article in East European Jewish Affairs and Polin, and a forthcoming chapter in Perspectives on Human Presence (Springer).

In August 2017 Joseph was Artistic Director and Curator for “Out of the Shadows: rediscovering Jewish music and theatre” at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. This was the fourth of five performance festivals, sponsored by the Performing the Jewish Archive project. The festival featured the Goldner String Quartet, Vox Ensemble (Sydney Philharmonia Choirs), Sydney Children’s Choir, SCM Chamber Choir, SSO Fellows, and staff and students of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
