One of two productions based on the musical Prince Bettliegend (Prinz Bettliegend), written in the Terezín/Theresienstadt Ghetto. Only the songs and vivid moments of survivor testimony about the show were preserved.
Prince Bettliegend. At the University of Sydney, director Ian Maxwell, producer Joseph Toltz and researcher/dramaturge Lisa Peschel created a plot outline, then the cast of deviser-performers (Robert Jarman, Nigel Kellway, Katia Molino, Gideon Payten-Griffiths and Yana Taylor) created the script. Kevin Hunt and students from the Jazz Performance Unit, Sydney Conservatorium of Music, arranged the music. Performed at the festival Out of the Shadows: Rediscovering Jewish Music and Theatre, Sydney, in August 2017.
Prinz Bettliegend. At Stellenbosch University, director Amelda Brand took the plot outline sent by Lisa Peschel, and she and her students devised their own version of the script. Leonore Bredekamp revised Kevin Hunt's arrangements for five-piece ensemble. Performed at the festival Out of the Shadows: Rediscovering Jewish Music and Theatre, Cape Town and Stellenbosch, in September 2017.
