This performance of Gideon Klein's melodrama Topol (The Poplar Tree) was its UK premiere, the world premiere having taken place the previous September in Pilsen, Czech Republic. It was included as part of a concert, 'Music on the Brink of Destruction', subsequently broadcast on BBC Radio 3. An accompanying radio documentary of the same name, written and presented by Shirli Gilbert, included an interview with David Fligg, the musicologist who has facilitated recent performances of Topol, after investigating Klein's manuscript in Prague's Jewish Museum.
