This article provides a timeline of the composer’s life and offers a fascinating glimpse of musical activity during the early years of the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. The article then examines in detail three of Klein’s works: the Three Songs for High Voice and Piano op.1 and String Quartet op.2 which were completed in German-occupied Prague and later discovered amongst a previously hidden hoard of manuscripts, while the other, The First Sin, also a rescued manuscript, dates from the time of Klein’s imprisonment in Terezín. Appendices include a chronological list of original compositions, arrangements and texts by the composer.
