These three songs represent part of Werner Baer's output of songs written to English texts in Australia from the late 1940s. Smile, Lovely Rose was published by Southern Music Publishing Co. in 1952. The words are by W. Austin Bevan. Threnody appears to be an unpublished manuscript (no date, no identifiable publisher). The words are by Joyce Trickett. The Unattainable also appears to be an unpublished song. The words are by A.C. Womack and the dedication on the manuscript is "To Florence Taylor, in sincere friendship". Florence Taylor was a winner of the Sun Aria competition who continued as a performer and pedagogue in later years. In 1961 she established the Opera & Arts Support Group.
